Log Splitter

We had some spruce trees that died in the shelterbelt; there was high potential some were going to fall on the holiday trailer or my 1968 plymouth...but worse it could fall on the wife's newly built green house!!!

There was no more thinking about it...time to take 'em down! Over a good weekend we cut them down and bucked them up into fire wood. One issue we discovered was that these are old trees and fairly good size. My 16" chainsaw was not big enough to cut though them at the bottom.

Now that they are cut up and stacked they look like this... in several piles around the acreage. There's only so much room around the firepit.

At least they are happy logs.

Ill admit, I prefer brains over braun and we had used up all our 'braun' hauling those big snarly logs, I wasn't really liking the idea of swinging an axe to split some of those suckers.

Walking through the local mens favourite hardware store I came across a Log Splitter, the Budget Committee said no, the gent behind me said every man needs a log splitter. The Budget Committee still said no.

Ya know where there is a will there is a way, admittedly a well stocked 20+ year collection in the scrap iron pile is also very helpful to finding your way. The scrap left over from building my motorcycle lift had barely settled back into the pile when I brought it back for another look. That and the other hydraulic cyclinder that hadn't quite found a permanent job was put to work.

A little trial and error, anyone ever see a green log go smush? Not a pretty sight.

I had to add a bit to the knife to shallow the angle of attack but now it works great!
