Our coffe pot died the other day so we went on the hunt for a new one. The new coffe pot that was stupid cheap would not turn itself on for me in the morning, Dang thing. I needed to fix this. I found an old CD ROM case and then installed an arduino board with real time clock. I can now program it when to start and it will shut itself off eventuly. no more forgetting the pot on when we go to work.
The other big bonus is that all of the settings like what time to start, how long to run before auto shut off etc. are all saved in EEPROM so even if the power goes out it won't lose any settings. The clock also has its own battery so the time is kept as well. This is absolute bliss for us out here with power blinks happening on a regular basis.
