Carb Sync

After a round of carburetor issues were finally resolved I needed to sync the carbs. ( ensure all 4 carburetors are pulling evenly). Touring bikes are not supposed to backfire and its nice if it gets better mileage than a motorhome.

There are special tools for this project that I don't have, as usual. I then asked around to see if some one had the tools or even 4 vacuum guages but I had no luck with that either. I geuss I don't know enough of the right people.

It was time to be creative. The theory is to make all of the carbs "balance" or have the same vacuum.

I went to town and purchased 50 feet of clear plastic line and plastic T's in the spayer section of the local farm supply, and built this. Total cost was $22. Beats the $100 and 2 weeks waiting for international shipping. It's a Canadian Summer, no time to waste.

I filled it half full of 10w30 oil. The vise gripes are there because the used valve I found in my junk drawer leaked a bit.

Engine not running.

When the engine was started it sucked some of the oil over the top of the unit and into the engine causing a lot of blue smoke out of the exhuast. That was just to make the neighbors wonder 'what the heck is he doing over there now?' They must be used to it by now, not even a phone call.

With a better adjustment a sync was attained.

Engine running this was as close as I could set them.

Using engine oil instead of mercury this tool is very sensitive. So much as leaning on the adjustment screws will make the levels move a substantial amount.

Not to bad, no backfire, almost 40mpg. Now we get 2 weeks of rain, Sigh.
