I finally got some time from a very busy fall and it is tinker time.
I got tired of starting up my computer only to realize that I had forgotten to turn on all of my SCSI devices first. As you may or may not know they do not mount simply by turning them on after the fact. So you have to do a restart because what I wanted is invariably on the external hard drive.
Solution is in this case very simple but it did require some open MAC surgery.
I first open the case and located the two wires that fed the 12volt dc fan. I tapped into these wires with a piece of RCA cable I just so happen to have kicking around and walla 12 volt switched DC external plug. ( That was the easy part )
The next project was to mutilate my wife's good power bar ( by the way she is not home tonight ).
After busting open the case I mounted a solid state relay and fed that by a 5 volt regulator.
Now when you power up the computer all of the devices turn on and mount properly. During shut down they wait until the computer is off before they power down.
Currently I have the hard drive, CD ROM, modem, printer, and monitor all plugged in and is seems to work well.
