The Review:

Ribbet! What a hoppingly good interactive CD! All multimedia tech is included - photos, video, animation, sounds and well written text is woven into a very easy to look at theme. Now with Digital Frog 2, the whole experience is even froggier!

The whole CD is split into 3 parts - dissection, anatomy and ecology. The new digitial frog mainscreen looks like this...

The dissection module is still the best part as far as I'm concerned... the photography is excellent and there are tons of hot spots that detail every little step and item. Beautiful, clear movies masterfully demonstrate dissection techniques. Screenshot from version 1;

A great new feauture in version 2 allows the student to actually make cuts! Instead of just viewing cut lines, you must connect cut points with a small scalpel on screen. This then leads to a Quicktime movie demonstrating the process...outstanding!

I noticed how much more clear the videos are in version 2;

...comparing the two screenshots, you can see the second movie window is sharper, even though the specimen is further away (and there is lost quality in prepping the image for the web, too). What really blows you away though, is the ability to view the movies in full screen if you wish. You can almost taste the frog! (Sorry about that).

The anatomy section is broken up into a variety of systems of the frog - following up each system is like taking a bunch of entertaining and educational adventures - each is filled with beautifully imagery, with some cool animations thrown in too!

There are a host of other great improvements that make purchasing the Digital Frog 2 worthwhile, even if you already own the first version. Version two will define and speak out terms for you, it's easier to navigate with a handy corner tab and map feature, it's got wonderful comparisons of anatomy with other species and groups, and if that's not enough, there are user-manipulable animations as well. I'm thoroughly impressed.

Another thing that should be mentioned is that Digital Frog 2 comes with a handy-dandy binder chock full of worksheets, puzzles, questions, diagrams and answers. There is also an extra CD included with all the workbook information in a variety of formats. Very convenient.

If you plop this CD into the drive and start playing around, it will really draw you in. You can't help checking out the frog calls and making your way through parts of the dissections - it's really irresistible because it is done so well. I strongly suggest this CD as an addition to your class - as a supplement to or replacement for frog anatomical studies, it is unmatched. This is one of those educational experiences your students will thoroughly enjoy and be very willing to explore and discover on their own.

With the release of version 2.5 in September 2006, Digital Frog gets even better. Digital Frog now sports interactive quizzes, higher resolution graphics, integral text-to-speech (a great addition for challenged and ESL students), and much more!

Conclusion:

Amazing dissection software that belongs in every biology class! Go buy Digital Frog today!
