Inside a Cow's Stomach

In order to study the digestive system of cows, they are sometimes fistulated. A fistulated cow is one that has a surgical hole into the stomach, with the opening fitted with a cannula. This surgery is simply a "larger" version of a commonly performed procedure to save cattle from bloating. Sometimes cattle eat too much alfalfa, which in their stomachs can lead to excessive gas production and bloating, which can lead to death. With the emergency insertion of a cannula into the stomach, the cow can be saved.
