Ethanol Explosion Goes Wrong
The ethanol "boom-jug" explosion is an effective and exciting demonstration, but in this case of this video, it's probably just a bit too exciting. When performed properly, ethanol vapours at the top of the jug ignite and rapidly burn downward to the bottom of the jug. This creates an exciting jet of flame that shoots out the top of the jug.
This video shows many safety shortcomings in regard to this demonstration:
clear the area - there is a flask of boiling liquid close to the demonstration
use a plastic jug - much less dangerous in the event of bursting
use a blast shield - any time there is the potential for explosion, a blast shield is recommended
