 Sulphur Burns in Oxygen

Sulphur will burn readily in oxygen to create sulphur dioxide. This can be problematic when it is the sulphur in coal that is burned in power-generating plants - the release of sulphur dioxide into the atmosphere can promote the formation of acid rain.
