CBL+TI83 Tutorial and Lab Correlations

Hardware and Software Recommendations

Background:

The one thing that science and technology have in common is that they are always changing! Therefore, successfully integrating technology into the science classroom can be a challenge. On this page you will find find hardware and software hints and resources that can make your technology integration efforts much easier.

In recent years easy-to-use probeware technology has become available that offers several advantages to the science classroom:

  • the ability to collect highly accurate data in real-time, and manipulate it on the computer
  • the ability to easily collect data that was previously difficult to collect in the high school lab, such as motion and changing levels of dissolved oxygen.
  • quick and easy lab preparation makes lab set-up easier and quicker, allowing for more labs and more hands-on time for students

Considering these advantages, the Science 10 technology idea pages for units A, B, C and D all contain several probeware labs (indicated by the icon), such as this one from unit B:

Toy Car Speed - time to go to the dollar store and pick up a few cool toys! This lab allows you to compare the motion of toy vehicles.

If you are considering investing in probeware technolgy for the classroom, or need some help implementing the equipment you already have, check out the recommendations below.

Hardware:

The labs described in the Science 10 technology idea pages use probeware equipment from Pasco. There are several probeware equipment manufacturers, but Pasco equipment has been tested extensively by the Science 10 webmaster, and proven to be very reliable and easy to use.

Pasco also offers several solutions for using probeware in the classroom and in the field. In short:

  • USB links connect to your computer to allow you to connect to a wide range of sensors:

  • Handheld Xplorer units allow you to collect data away from (or without) a computer, and store it for downloading if you wish.

  • Solutions exist for connecting probes to Palm handhelds as well:

Software:

If you invest in Pasco technology and plan to use probeware with a computer, DataStudio is the software you will be using:

This software is easy to implement and use - see this page for a full overview.
