Advances in digital technology have made recording microscopic events in the classroom fairly simple. Different hardware and software can be used to make digital recordings, but the basic process is the same:
- Attach a video camera to your microscope. Several models of cameras are made specifically for microscope attachment, such as the Boreal VideoSkope:

- If the microscope camera is one of the latest models, you may be able to connect it directly to your computer (usually via a USB cable). If not, then run a cable from the video out on the camera attached to the microscope to a digital video camera:

- Most digital video cameras have the ability to act as an analog-to-digital converter, allowing the video signal from the microscope to be converted to a form usable by a computer.
- The digital video camera is then connected to a computer, and the microscope images are imported into a suitable movie-editing program, such as iMovie for the Mac platform.
- If you don't want to go through the trouble of making your own movies, there are quality commercial products available, such as "The Biology of Protists". There are also sites on the Internet you can visit to view short movies, such as at the Protist Information Server and the Fun Science Gallery.
