Neat Propane Experiment

I decided to do a bit of science for the kids. As you may or may not know (or care) propane has a boiling point of about -40 Celsius. It is said that summer propane is "cut" with butane because it is cheaper and has more BTU's. This will raise it's boiling point a few degrees. To keep propane powered vehicles and houses running in the winter they cut it with natural gas to lower its boiling point. The propane lesson is over, there will be a test later.

Current temp is -37.8 Celsius (the over night low was -42.7).I bought this propane last summer and I didn't feel like a BBQ tonight anyway. So armed with the aforementioned theory, I went outside and I took the propane bottle off of the barbecue turned it upside down and opened the valve. The excess flow valve prevented me from getting very much but I did get a small sample. Then again a large sample may have proven to be a little too exciting.

In the pic you can see it came out as a clear liquid and just stayed in the container.

After I warmed it with my hand for a few seconds it boiled just like water.

This is a quicktime movie. You can download Quicktime for Windows here.
